Lectures & workshops with Dr. Hudson

Dr. Patrick Hudson believes that education is an important part of medical practice. For almost twenty years he has produced booklets, produced workshops and given lectures to improve the public's understanding about plastic surgery. He speaks to many different groups throughout the United States and abroad. He goes to Europe twice each year. If your group would like to hear Dr. Hudson speak on the following topics please call our office. We can arrange a convenient time, such as a lunch break or evening meeting

Examples of Groups: Many community groups enjoy the chance to learn about the fascinating field of cosmetic plastic surgery. Businesses, church groups and women's groups have used these lectures for their members. We have combined these lectures with other business groups, such as clothing stores, insurance companies, beauticians and radio stations. Schools and universities find that many of these topics interest their students and parent groups. Health organizations, such as hospitals, clinics and HMOs have included these lectures in their educational programs.

BODY IMAGE: EMOTIONAL ISSUES AND PLASTIC SURGERY. Everyday we read articles about dieting and reshaping our bodies through exercise and surgery. Dr. Hudson discusses body image and how it develops. He explains the emotional factors that affect how we see our bodies and how we respond to more common plastic surgery operations. This lecture is suitable for both men and women. All age groups may find it interesting.

COSMETIC SURGERY AFTER PREGNANCY. Most women are happy to be mothers but few of them are happy with the changes in their bodies caused by pregnancy. Many find it difficult to get back in shape. Unfortunately, this is not a simple matter of losing weight or exercising. Pregnancy and childbirth cause permanent changes in the body. Surgery is the only way to improve these changes. Two obvious examples are loose breast tissue and pouching of the lower abdomen due to separation of the abdominal muscles. Dr. Hudson explains why these changes develop and what modern plastic surgery can do to improve them. This lecture is especially suitable for women who have children or are considering starting their family.

Recommended time: 1 hour

Group size: This is a personal subject and attendees like to ask questions. We recommend groups of 10-50.

CHANGING THE SHAPE OF YOUR FACE. Rhinoplasty, or reshaping the nose, has always been one of the most popular operations in plastic surgery. Dr. Hudson will explain how he changes the shape of the nose. He will describe reshaping the chin and the ears and talk about liposuction to remodel the cheeks and neck. He will present the advantages and disadvantages of treating protruding ears in children. This lecture is suitable for both men and women. All age groups may find it interesting.

AGING CHANGE AND COSMETIC SURGERY. Most of us stay healthy and feel well until late in life. Unfortunately our external appearance does not keep up with our inner feelings. This discrepancy between how we feel and how we look causes stress for many men and women. Dr. Hudson explores the effects of aging and what you can do to minimize them. He describes the many methods, both surgical and non-surgical, available to relieve the effects of aging. He will explain facelifting, eyelid tightening, forehead lifting, endoscopic surgery and other methods to reduce the effects of aging. He will compare the laser with a chemical peel and discuss how you can benefit from the many new advances in surgery. This lecture is suitable for both men and women. Although all age groups may find it interesting those over 35 usually find it most enjoyable.

COSMETIC PLASTIC SURGERY FOR MEN. Men experience many of the same emotional issues regarding their bodies as women, but only recently have they started to talk about them. Male cosmetic surgery is one of the fastest growing areas in medicine. Many issues only affect men such as male pattern baldness and large male breasts (gynecomastia). Dr. Hudson discusses these issues and how he modifies the standard operations of plastic surgery, such as facelifting and body sculpturing, for men. He will describe the role of ultrasonic liposuction in gynecomastia. This lecture is most suitable for men, although because women may also want to attend if they participate in making health care decisions.

Recommended time: 1 hour

Group size: any number, but many men feel more comfortable in groups of about 15-50.

RESHAPING THE BODY WITH BODY SCULPTURING. Some areas of the body will not respond even to vigorous diet and exercise. This is why reshaping the body using surgery has become so popular. Liposuction and ultrasonic liposuction have transformed our views about body sculpturing. Dr. Hudson explains abdominoplasty ("tummy tucks"), breast surgery, liposuction, and thigh and arm tightening. He discusses the changes made available by ultrasonic liposuction. This lecture is suitable for both men and women and all age groups.

Recommended time: 1 hour

THE ETHICS OF COSMETIC SURGERY: SOME MORAL ISSUES SURROUNDING COSMETIC SURGERY. The enormous growth of cosmetic plastic surgery raises many questions about the ethical issues of changing the appearance of the body. Throughout this discussion Dr. Hudson will provide you with thought provoking ideas that may change your views on cosmetic surgery. He will discuss surgical operations that change a person's racial appearance. He explores which operations are suitable for teenagers and which are not. He describes the ultimate body change, sex change surgery. This lecture is suitable for both men and women of all ages. Anyone interested in legal and ethical issues in medicine may find this especially enjoyable.
