![]() I hate my nose. But plastic surgery? You can't see it from the photograph but I have a long, prominent nose. For as long as I can remember, I have always hated it - and spent my plastic surgery attachment in medical school considering what to do about it.One day a friend and I were bemoaning our noses and asked the consultant surgeon what he might do to correct, camouflage, reshape and remould our faces. We made drawings and pinched ideas from celebrity magazines. In response to our questions he raised his eyebrows (possibly in an amused way, but he was wearing a surgical mask so it was hard to tell) but declined to indicate whether he felt our ideas were good or bad. He did, however, remind us that he had trained in plastic surgery to help people with burns and serious disfigurements. We were gently but suitably chastened. Not that I was going to be put off. Several years before this another friend, Louise, had refused to believe my insistence that when I had the money I'd have the surgery. "One day," she said mysteriously of my nose, "you'll be glad of it. You have a good French nose." It is true that I have a large helping of Gallic blood but I had no idea what she meant. She, however, wouldn't be drawn any further on the subject. - copyright Margaret McCartney/FT- and then find out more about HOW A RHINOPLASTY IS DONE As always you can email Dr. Hudson if you have any questions. Test your plastic surgery knowledge before going under the knife As summer and beach time roll around and it seems too late for diet and exercise, women's thoughts these days seem to turn to plastic surgery. Almost any part of the body can be fixed quickly, but what are the psychological truths to be considered before going under the knife? Take this quiz and find out. 1. After I have plastic surgery, I'll look just as good as those movie stars I see walking down the red carpet. 2. People can become addicted to plastic surgery. 3. At one time, plastic surgery utilized all types of the material plastic. 4. If a person's appearance is improved by plastic surgery, he or she is always thrilled with the outcome. 5. A face-lift and tummy tuck after a divorce will set a woman up for successful dating. 6. Women who get breast implants have a higher rate of suicide than those who don't. 7. People who have restorative types of procedures are more likely to be able to easily adjust to and embrace the results than those who are changing their type of look to a different one. - copyright Seattle Post-Intelligencer/ Joyce Brothers - and then find out more about body sculpting for the Summer As always you can email Dr. Hudson if you have any questions. Appearance of Hands Can Reveal Age, Study Finds; Plastic Surgery Patients Shouldn't Overlook Hands for More Youthful Appearance Want to know a person's real age? Just look at their hands, reports a study in the June issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery(r), the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). According to the study, most people can accurately tell a person's age by viewing only their hands."A primary motivation to have plastic surgery is to look and feel better, often by seeking a younger looking appearance. However, looking younger after your facelift or eyelid surgery can conflict with aged hands that simply do not match the face," said Roxanne Guy, MD, ASPS president-elect. "After the face, hands are the second most visible, tell-tale sign of one's age. If your goal is to look more youthful or you are bothered by the appearance of your hands, you may seriously want to consider hand rejuvenation." In the study, people examined unaltered photographs of female hands and were asked to estimate the women's ages, i.e., younger than 20 years, 20 to 30 years, 30 to 40 years, etc. In the majority of cases, participants were able to accurately estimate the age of each woman in the unaltered photographs. Participants were also asked to compare digitally altered photographs of female hands -- blemishes and hand veins were removed or jewelry and nail polish were added -- to unaltered photographs to assess which hands looked younger. The majority of participants felt that the altered photos of women's hands appeared younger. However, alterations to photos of very elderly hands -- characterized by thin skin, age spots, wrinkles, deformity, veins and prominent joints -- did not change the participants' ability to distinguish the person's age. Overall, the physical characteristic which most commonly gave away age was prominent hand veins. In altered images where hand veins were removed, participants significantly felt hands looked younger. Fullness and a lack of wrinkles and veins characterized the youngest looking hands. Nail polish and jewelry were also found to make hands appear younger looking. "The good news is, although your hands may reveal more about your age than you desire, there are remedies out there," said Dr. Guy. "A good medical skincare regimen that focuses on the hands can be highly effective in maintaining skin thickness and fullness. Non-surgical procedures like laser treatments and chemical peels can reduce age spots. Fat injections can be used to plump up hands and reduce the visibility of veins and laser ablation of unwanted hand veins can reduce veins." - copyright Yahoo Business/ASPS - and then find out more about aging in the hand As always you can email Dr. Hudson if you have any questions. Medical insurer warns of plastic surgery risks The Medical Defence Union has paid out just under £8.5 million in compensation and legal costs over the last ten years to patients harmed by cosmetic surgery procedures. The majority of claims were made by patients who had breast and facial surgery and were dissatisfied with the outcome of the procedure. In a comprehensive analysis of claims from cosmetic surgeons’ independent practice, published in today’s Hospital Doctor magazine, the MDU found that two thirds of cases related to breast and facial surgery (85 and 82 cases respectively) and that more than 40 per cent of patients who were successful in bringing a claim against their surgeon were dissatisfied with the results of the surgery (106 cases).- copyright Incisive Media Investments - and then find out more about operations that are most likely to lead to litigation As always you can email Dr. Hudson if you have any questions.
