Don't get burned by laser hair removal
As the warm weather season approaches that means putting away the coats and breaking out the shorts. You may be one of thousands of people who have decided to take part in one of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures now available: laser hair removal. But keep in mind this is a serious medical procedure.
Bumps, nicks and cuts are all things of the past if you are one of the millions of people who opt for laser hair removal instead of more "old school" methods such as shaving or waxing to attain smooth, silky skin. Currently, laser hair removal is one of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures. However, as laser hair removal procedures grow in popularity, consumers must realize it is still a serious procedure with potentially harmful risks and side effect

African-Americans are turning to plastic surgery in record numbers
Seven years ago Vickii Ivy, 32, of Cordova was dealing with a stomach roll even a personal trainer couldn't help her lose.
A Caesarean section left her skin so stretched "it just hung. It was ugly," she said. "When I wore my clothes, I still looked pregnant." Ivy had a tummy tuck, but it took her three years to decide to do it. She feared the risk of surgery, and she was unsure of its social acceptability. "I didn't want people to think I was trying to be anything else than who I was." One reason she went ahead was the encouragement of her sister, Veronica Sanders, a plastic surgery nurse for 10 years.

'Silver surgery' takes off as over-61s have nip and tuck
Nearly one person in 10 choosing to have cosmetic surgery in Britain is over 61 years of age, a leading private hospital group says today. Data from Bupa Hospitals confirms the boom in "silver surgery", which saw a 40 per cent growth in operations for the over-61s last year. In the previous year, surgery in that age group rose by 37 per cent, proving that looking better and younger is no longer the province of people in their 30s and 40s, and is becoming an established trend. The surgery is equally popular among men and women. Men and women have told staff that they thought that it was about time that they spent some time on themselves for a change."It's not just about covering up grey hair any more," said Dr Annabel Bentley, Bupa's assistant medical director. "With an ever-ageing population and more emphasis on trying to look our best for longer, cosmetic surgery for those in their later years is likely to become more commonplace. "While we welcome the silver surgery generation, we always advise our patients of the increased risk involved when undergoing surgery in later life and ensure that people are equipped to make an informed decision."

Leaving the Folds
After a Gastric Bypass, Some Formerly Obese Patients Need a Riskier Surgery To Shed Excess Skin
Bariatric surgery -- the stomach-shrinking operation performed to treat obesity -- works, and it is becoming safer all the time. But there's a catch often not understood by those who undergo the procedure: Once they lose the weight the surgery helps them lose, there may be more surgery to come -- surgery that is costlier and riskier and that requires a longer recovery time than the original operation. The reason: excess skin. An obese person who loses weight quickly will lose the fat but not the skin that once enveloped the fat. The arms, thighs, abdomen, breasts, all lose texture and sag. "It's as if a very, very large person all of a sudden had all the air let out, as if [he] were a doll," says Richard A. D'Amico, chief of the Department of Plastic Surgery at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center in Englewood, N.J.

City Alerts Public to National Dogbite Prevention Week
Millions of dog-loving Americans know of the many joys that a well-trained and socialized dog can bring to our lives. But for millions of Americans, the interactions are less positive; every year, dogs bite an estimated 4.7 million people, ranging from minor nips to major attacks. Experts believe that public education can help prevent these bites. That is why Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control, is reminding citizens to review dog bite prevention tips with family members during National Dog Bite Prevention Week, May 21-27.Each year, 800,000 Americans seek medical attention for dog bites; half of these are children. Of those injured, 386,000 require treatment in an emergency department and about a dozen die. Although national statistics show that the rate of dog bite-related injuries is highest for children ages 5 to 9 years, with the rate decreasing as children age, Fort Wayne statistics show adults as the most likely victim. In fact, adults were the victims in 49% of Fort Wayne 2005 animal bite cases, while children under the age of 11 were the victims in 22% of 2005 animal bite cases. The reverse statistic in Fort Wayne is attributed to the pro-active animal bite education targeting children in Fort Wayne.
