Buy A Patient, Lose Your License
Medical marketers are selling patients and the cost for California doctors could be a $50,000 fine, or prison time.
San Luis Obispo, CA (PRWEB) May 27, 2006 -- In the competitive world of elective healthcare access to potential patients is invaluable. So what doctor wouldn’t jump at the chance to buy guaranteed patient referrals from a legitimate medical marketing firm? Any doctor who doesn’t want to spend a year reading Plastic Surgery News from behind bars. An emerging trend in medical marketing treats patients like commodities and puts medical professionals in serious legal peril. Pay per lead programs, a popular form of online affiliate marketing, are popping up like weeds in the elective healthcare industry. These programs charge a set fee for the name and contact information of a patient interested in a specific procedure. According to the Medical Board of California such programs are a clear violation of Section 650 of the Business and Professions Code, and similar codes exist in many states. Across the nation, hundreds of surgeons have been lured in to the unethical practice of “fee for referral.”The way Section 650 is written, it’s no wonder medical professionals might be confused about the legality of participating in pay-per-lead programs.

Study suggests Botox may cure depression
There may be more than just cosmetic benefits to using the drug best-known for smoothing wrinkles. A new study has found that Botox may cure severe depression, and other studies have found the toxin can be used to fight Parkinson's disease, control bladder problems, and treat prostate cancer. According to a paper published last week in the Journal of Dermatologic Surgery, a small pilot study conducted by Dr. Eric Finzi found nine of 10 depressed patients recovered from their depressive symptoms after getting Botox injections between the eyebrows -- nearly twice the success rate of anti-depressants. Finzi has since expanded his study to 15 patients.

Pairing up for plastic surgery
Lauren-Beth Kassinger says that if she bought a pair of shoes that looked good on her, her mom would "go out and get the same thing." So it wasn't such a stretch, after Kassinger decided to get plastic surgery, that her mom, Elvia Rabinor, decided to do it, too.
According to 2005 statistics released by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, a specialty group for certified plastic surgeons who focus on the face, head and neck, 34% of those surveyed report that more people are getting plastic surgery with a companion. The pairings range from friends, sisters, husbands and wives, and mothers and daughters, to some more unusual cases.
"I had a divorced couple come in recently," says Jay Calvert, a plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, Calif. "I guess they wanted to get freshened up for the next experience."
The tandem surgery experience was just one trend among many that emerged in 2005 as Americans continued their love affair with plastic surgery. Numbers gathered by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) show that in 2005 surgeons performed:
• More than 10.2 million cosmetic procedures, up 11% from 2004. Of those, the bulk (8.5 million) were minimally invasive procedures such as Botox injections and chemical peels. The rest were procedures such as liposuction and breast augmentation.

Legislation raises some questions about growing medical spa business
ELEGANT WOODEN DOORS, fresh flowers and smiling attendants greet visitors at the Beauty Renewed spa in Tracy.
Although it may resemble a typical beauty spa, the business offers services that differ in one important way: Theyre permanent. The plastic surgery business is booming, and doctors offices and medical spas — like Beauty Renewed — are spreading increasingly into more remote areas in California and across the nation. These areas are probably the most favorable (for growth), said Dr. Peter Chi, owner of Beauty Renewed, which offers cosmetic surgery as well as a number of less invasive procedures at the medical spa on-site. Medical spas, such as the one in Tracy, offer consumers relatively inexpensive, noninvasive procedures — like Botox, photo facials, hair removal and other laser treatments. (Prices at Beauty Renewed, for example, range from around $100 for an individual treatment of facial laser hair removal to between $2,500 and $3,500 for Chis least expensive surgical procedures.) Yet, as Californias medical spa business has continued to grow, state lawmakers are taking a closer look at the industry. Right now there are no standards for any individual performing laser treatments, said Sen. Liz Figueroa, D-Fremont, who has had constituents come to her with burns and scars fromimproper use of laser equipment at medical spas.

Lotions, surgery antidotes to aging
rowing old gracefully has gotten a whole lot easier, especially when you look at the number of products available that range from anti-aging creams to temper wrinkles, to commercials that tout artificial knees. There is even a new camera the size of a pill that can circulate throughout your body to look for problems. It can even conduct some procedures and dispense medications. These products are finding a market among baby boomers who don't want to age or want to age well. Without passing judgment, let's see what is out there. The most extreme change that you can make is via cosmetic surgery. In 2003 there were almost 2.1 million surgeries, up 200,000 over the previous year. Liposuction was the most popular followed by breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, and face lifts. Only eyelid surgery and rhinoplasty went down while the others had double-digit increases.

China bans liquid to enlarge breasts
China has banned a breast-enlarging liquid that was injected into more than 300,000 women and caused such pain for some that they had their breasts removed -- the latest scandal over dangerous treatments blamed on lax oversight or corrupt doctors. The China Daily, which reported the ban Thursday, said the Chinese-made liquid, Ao Mei Ding, was approved for general use in 2000 before completing required testing and was used in hospitals and beauty parlors throughout the country ... China has had a series of medical scandals recently. This week, state media said five people died after receiving a drug for gallbladder inflammation that contained a counterfeit ingredient that can cause kidney failure. In other cases, patients have been maimed or killed by doctors who performed complex treatments for which they weren't qualified, such as surgery to lengthen limbs.
