N.Y. 2nd Cosmetic Surgery Death Reported
A hospital under investigation after the cosmetic surgery death of the author of "The First Wives Club" confirmed Friday that a second patient died there this week. The death Monday at Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital, also confirmed by state health officials, comes five weeks after the death of Olivia Goldsmith, who suffered a heart attack as she went under anesthesia for a facelift procedure.
All hospital protocol and procedures appeared to have been followed in both cases, said Ann Silverman, a hospital spokeswoman. She said the hospital believed the deaths were unrelated.

Cosmetic Surgery Quick Facts: 2003 ASAPS Statistics
Highlights of 2003 cosmetic surgery statistics released today by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the nation's leading organization for cosmetic surgery education and research:
* There were nearly 8.3 million surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic
procedures performed in 2003, according to the most comprehensive survey
to date of U.S. physicians and surgeons by the American Society for
Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). Surgical procedures represented 22
percent of the total, and nonsurgical procedures were 78 percent of the
total.
* From 2002-2003, there was a 20 percent increase in the total number of
cosmetic procedures. Surgical procedures increased by 12 percent, and
nonsurgical procedures increased by 22 percent.

Cosmetic surgery flourishing in Cuban hospitals
Idania Bello Acosta's bruised face was wrapped with gauze and her swollen, stitched eyes were concealed behind dark sunglasses as she waited for a checkup at one of Havana's largest and busiest hospitals.
While most patients around her had little choice but to succumb to the scalpel to remove cysts or tumors, Bello Acosta was just making another brief detour on the road to beautiful. The 47-year-old store manager had a tummy tuck four years ago. Then she had a breast lift. Now a surgeon had smoothed out the wrinkles around her eyelids and chin just four days ago.
