International patients decline at Texas Medical Center after 9-11
The number of international patients at Texas Medical Center has declined so dramatically since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks that hospital officials have discussed creating a medical visa system or focusing on Latin America and Asia as sources of overseas patients. In 2001, more than 15,000 international patients were hospitalized at the medical center, and thousands more came for outpatient procedures such as checkups and minor cosmetic surgery. At one point, Texas Medical Center placed staff members at Bush Intercontinental Airport to assist international patients upon their arrival. The number of international patients at M.D. Anderson declined 30 percent in the fiscal year after Sept. 11, 2001, said Wendeline Jongenburger, director of international programs. This year, the numbers will likely fall an additional 5 percent to 10 percent, she said. - copyright Associated Press/ABC - Read more of this article: International patients decline at Texas Medical Center after 9-11 the pros and cons of travelling abroad for cosmetic surgery As always you can email Dr. Hudson if you have any questions.
