Individual body parts have price tags. People want your body. And they are willing to pay for it.
Even as the medical community debates the wisdom of giving people incentives to donate organs, the free market is increasingly putting a price tag on individual body parts. A 1984 federal law makes it a crime to sell vital organs, but it specifies only what can't be sold, not what can. Many replaceable parts, or those extracted without causing harm, can be legally sold, and these days that market is expanding well beyond the traditional lineup of sperm, blood plasma and hair. Not only is demand for eggs growing as more people turn to fertility clinics, but the Internet has also helped create a tiny industry in breast milk. There is even a niche for urine, as the growing use of drug tests prompts people with tainted samples to seek out ones that will pass muster. The market demand "has created a kind of eBay of the body," says Arthur Caplan, director for the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania. Some are pushing to let vital organs join the marketable mix. The American Medical Association, hoping to curtail the current organ shortage, voted recently to encourage studies on the impact of moderate financial incentives on donations. Recent congressional bills have suggested tax credits of as much as $10,000 for donation, as well as tax refunds. Others are exploring indirect incentives such as reimbursement for funeral expenses, medical leave and disability insurance. For now, online auction sites and classified ads are the main outlet for such sales. EBay doesn't allow body parts to be sold on its site except hair and _ for legitimate educational purposes, bones. - copyright The Repository - Read more of this article: Individual body parts have price tags. Not everyone is a good candidate for liposuction or spot fat reduction. Patients with stretch marks and cellulite do not get as good a result
Who is a good candidate for liposuction?
Not everyone is a good candidate for liposuction. Patients with stretch marks and cellulite do not get as good a result. It is important for the patient to be in good health. Hypertension and diabetes increase the risk of complications from surgery. Patients over 40 can still have surgery but must accept that skin contraction is less likely and loose skin can result. Some surgeons will not operate on patients with inelastic skin. In most cases patient with clotting disorders, untreated hernias in the area of surgery, and obesity are not candidates for surgery. Anyone who suffers from any serious illness, either physical or emotional, may not be suitable candidates for surgery. Ultrasonic liposuction may offer the possibility of surgery to patients who are not candidates for traditional liposuction. - copyright Patrick Hudson MDPA 505/242 0070 - Read more of this article: Not everyone is a good candidate for liposuction or spot fat reduction. New birthday breasts are gift bestseller. Women are more receptive to plastic surgery presents than men
Free daily newspaper Urban claimed that a growing number of married men and women, perturbed at their spouses' ever regressing looks and figures, are lashing out on an untraditional birthday present - an all expenses paid trip to the local plastic surgeon. Whilst men are willing to invest thousands of kroner to see their wives equipped with a new, firm set of breasts, women are, more often than not, tired of looking at the bags under their husband's eyes. Leading specialist Benedikte Thuesen of Erichsens Cosmetic Surgery Clinic in Charlottenlund confirmed the trend.'The majority of men who come here to have bags under the eyes removed have been sent by their wives,’ said Dr. Thuesen. 'However, in many cases they don't really want to go through with the operation, and I end up sending them home to think it through. Women are far more receptive to having their drooping breasts lifted, polished and renovated - and their husband's joy is generally even greater.' - copyright Copenhagen Post - Read more of this article: New birthday breasts are gift bestseller. Reality TV: Salvation By Liposuction
"You also couldn’t help feeling like you needed a shower and a chemical peel after watching such a slimy, dehumanizing and exploitive escapade." It’s reality TV by Botox - boob jobs as entertainment. In his latest Against the Grain commentary, CBSNews.com's Dick Meyer says reality TV's latest entry, “Extreme Makeover,” makes him extremely sick. Remember, dear, it’s what inside that counts. Isn’t that what your mom told you? Isn’t that what you tell your kids? Well, ABC’s new “reality” show, “Extreme Makeover” blows the lid off that old crock. What’s inside, it turns out, doesn’t mean diddly-squat. Looks are everything. So if your appearance does not conform to acceptable cultural standards, please get fixed by the nearest available plastic surgeon. Non-conforming personality traits will be extinguished later. In each episode of the show, that inside sources say is produced by Satan, two self-described ugly ducklings trade their dignity and privacy for free plastic surgery. After confessing their insecurities to the show’s hostess, they are whisked off to Hollywood for massive structural rehabilitation, including facelifts, eye jobs, nose jobs, and breast augmentation, liposuction, microdermabrasion and ear pin backs. - copyright CBS - Read more of this article: Reality TV: Salvation By Liposuction and then find out more about the difference between plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery As always you can email Dr. Hudson if you have any questions. The doctor and his doll
She was a plain, dumpy provincial girl; he was Germany's best-known cosmetic surgeon. They married and he transformed her into a plastic beauty who craved fame and luxury. Then it all went wrong; Tatjana ran off with another man, while her husband was fatally wounded in an axe attack. Now she's inherited his fortune - and been arrested. Jeevan Vasagar reports from Nuremberg
Franz Gsell was Germany's most celebrated plastic surgeon. Tatjana Gsell, his second wife, was his finest creation; a plain, dumpy girl from a backwoods Bavarian town who was so desperate to become a society beauty that she allegedly endured more than 20 operations. Franz enlarged her breasts from A- to C-cups, slimmed her bulbous nose and thickened her lips to a Hollywood pout in a quest to create "the perfect woman". If, that is, your notion of the perfect woman is a Eurotrash babe. And those were only the operations she admitted to. According to a former friend: "Franz also operated on her chin, eyes and cheekbones and used liposuction to get rid of the fat." Tatjana, now 31, was transformed into a silicone doll with chicken-drumstick arms, spherical breasts, taut cheeks and a permanently stupefied gaze. While the surgeon carried on helping Germany's wealthy defy time and nature, she used his credit card to get on with being a Luxus-Frau - literally, a "luxury wife" - embarking on shopping trips to Paris and Milan and an arduous beauty schedule that began when her hair stylist came to call at 8am. "It takes a lot of effort to look this good," she once said. Not just lip service: Addiction to moisturizing products debated by users, experts
Joe Wray is an addict. But it's not caffeine, alcohol or cigarettes that have him hooked. No, Wray craves a blend of petrolatum, padimate 0, lanolin, isopropyl myristate and cetyl alcohol. He's addicted to ChapStick. "I'm known as the ChapStick King," says the 47-year-old Ogden Dunes resident. "In the summer, when it's hot and humid, I'll put it on all day long. My daughter and my fiancé are always giving me a hard time, saying things like 'Here he goes again, breaking out the lip balm.'" Wray, a captain with the Michigan City Fire Department, estimates he applies lip balm about once an hour on steamy summer days. Never without his fix, he carries a stick in the pocket of his jacket and always has a backup stashed in his car. In a pinch, when he's with lip balm, he'll use a dab of vegetable oil. Anything to keep his kisser hydrated. Just don't tell him he has a problem. "I can stop anytime I want to," he says defiantly. His family is not so sure. "It's become a real obsession," Kathleen Pupillo, Wray's stepmother, says of his ChapStick dependency. "He'll stick his hand in his pocket and put that stuff on eight or nine times in an hour. He doesn't even recognize how often he uses it. And then when he goes to give me a kiss, all you taste is Chap Stick." As for Wray's contention his active outdoor lifestyle and his profession are the reasons for his habitual usage, Pupillo can only chuckle. "He says it's because of his fighting fires, but how many fires does he put out in our kitchen?" But the fix is only temporary n just a few minutes after application, lip balm addicts are once again confronted with the same dilemma. Tips for ensuring lip health * Use lip care daily. Use a lip care product as part of a daily regimen to moisturize your lips and maintain their healthy condition. A lip conditioner containing the natural moisturizers cocoa butter and aloe verais an effective combination. * Use lip care before exposure to dry environment. Whenever you are exposed to especially drying conditions, whether due to harsh outdoor elements or a dry indoor environment, use a lip care product that seals in natural moisture and seals out the drying forces. - copyright nwitimes.com - Read more of this article: Not just lip service: Addiction to moisturizing products debated by users, experts and then find out more about sunlight damage and the skin As always you can email Dr. Hudson if you have any questions. Doctor scrutinized in death, N.C. Medical Board criticizes Charlotte surgeon's conduct
The N.C. Medical Board has accused a Charlotte plastic surgeon of unprofessional conduct in connection with the death of patient Sandra Joyner two years ago and has scheduled a disciplinary hearing for Nov. 21. Dr. Peter Tucker of the Center for Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery "failed to supervise his staff sufficiently" and their "failures led directly to (Joyner's) death," the board's report said. Joyner, 45, the mother of two teenagers, died April 10, 2001, after surgery at Tucker's Billingsley Road office. She had undergone a mini facelift, fat grafts to the lips, and laser therapy of the lower eyelids and facial scars. The board's report said Tucker's nurse anesthetist gave Joyner an injection of 2 cubic centimeters of fentanyl, a painkiller, in the recovery room, "which caused (Joyner) to suffer respiratory depression and arrest." - copyright Charlotte Observer - Read more of this article: Doctor scrutinized in death, N.C. Clinic is giving women a lift
Each year, thousands of women go under the surgeon's knife in a bid to look better, become more confident and fight off the ageing process. Now a clinic has come to Peterborough to help city women take that first step towards improving their appearance. Once upon a time, cosmetic surgery was only for the rich and famous. Women looked on in envy as 40-year-old actresses looked 20 years younger, models posed with the perfect pout and glamour girls always looked sexy. But in the year 2003 there is almost nothing that money can't buy, and mums, daughters and even grannies are putting themselves through pain – in a bid to keep young and beautiful.Breast enlargements or "boob jobs" are now the most sought-after operation across the globe, whether it's a reduction, enlargement or uplift. - copyright Johnston Press New Media. - Read more of this article: Clinic is giving women a lift and then find out more about breast enlargement As always you can email Dr. Hudson if you have any questions. There are so many things that radio cannot do - and thank goodness for that
...Nor, thank God, can wireless do makeover programmes. Radio 4 would be hard put to find ten million listeners eager to chuck themselves into their fireside chairs after the long day’s work was done in order to tune into an anonymous voice explaining that he was standing in a large room painted beige which he was going to transform into two small rooms painted puce, giving out on to a fly-blown garden his hortimaniac colleague was about to convert into a half-acre of pine planks with a polythene pond in it boasting a solar-powered plastic Triton that vomited spotlit water. Even if he explained that she would be broadcasting without a bra. Nor is television’s increasingly nauseating vogue for cosmetic surgery accessible to Radio 4: there is scant entertainment percentage in listening to a hammer breaking an excessively Roman conk, or a wattled neck being pulled back behind the ears and riveted in place, or a bust being so enthusiastically lifted, siliconised and tautened that if the lucky recipient wishes henceforth to smile she will have to cross her legs to give herself some slack. - copyright Times - Read more of this article: There are so many things that radio cannot do - and thank goodness for that and then find out more about reshaping the face As always you can email Dr. Hudson if you have any questions. Economy doesn't put new face on demand for plastic surgery
From a lift to a tuck, breasts to botox and liposuction to laser treatments, the business of plastic surgery is booming. Increasingly, it's not just millionaires getting makeovers. Cosmetic surgery and similar treatments run anywhere from a couple of hundred dollars to several thousand. Insurance doesn't cover most surgeries, which means procedures are paid out of the patient's pocket. "It's just your basic, average nice people who are getting something changed that bugs them, not some egocentric Hollywood type going for face-lift number five," said Dr. Allen Guinn of Aurora Plastic & Hand Surgery PC. In fact, according to statistics published by the American Society for Aesthetic Surgery, from 1997-2002, cosmetic procedures increased 228 percent. Cost of Cosmetic Surgery Declined During Past Decade
Although prices for health care services have risen almost twice as fast as consumer prices generally over the past decade, prices for cosmetic surgery are actually lower in real terms, according to the National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA). The key difference, according to the NCPA, is who pays the bill. Third parties (insurers, employers and government) pay most of the costs of health care. But cosmetic surgery is almost always paid by patients out of their own pocket. Among the factors that keep cosmetic surgery prices low are the following: * Cosmetic surgeons search for ways to be efficient; for example, performing operations in their offices, rather in a hospital. * Cosmetic surgeons often quote patients a package price, and Web sites offer competitive bids for surgical procedures. * When procedures become pricey, substitute products quickly emerge; for example, laser resurfacing, Retin-A treatments, botox or collagen injections, chemical peels and dermabrasion can replace the need for a costly facelift. - copyright National Center for Policy Analysis - Read more of this article: Cost of Cosmetic Surgery Declined During Past Decade and then find out more about the current costs of cosmetic surgery As always you can email Dr. Hudson if you have any questions.
