DEBORAH INJECTS SOME YOUTH INTO HER PARTIES
A Carlisle nurse is offering Cumbrians the chance to kill those wrinkles by staging a Botox party at home.
Mum-of-one Deborah Baty, 41, has started giving the "injections of youth" at get-togethers in the city.
The registered nurse believes the market for the controversial treatment is massive.

Modern Primitives Meet Gene Therapy
Humans have always practiced body modification with available tools. Genetic technologies will join the list, and there's no reason why they shouldn't. Few probably cared. But this month, Illinois citizens came closer to losing an important right. In early April, the Illinois House passed a bill restricting tongue splitting, the lengthwise cutting of the tongue to create a snakelike fork. Under the bill, which the state Senate must pass, only doctors and dentists could cut tongues. Few would do so for nonmedical reasons, essentially making the free modification of tongues illegal. To some, the right to a forked tongue is far less important than, say, the right to bear arms (which most assuredly leads to far more death and disfigurement). And people who get squeamish around a simple piercing will likely applaud the bill, happy to keep more "freaks" off the street. But defenders of liberty take note: Body modification isn't freaky at all. Rather, it has existed for thousands of years, expressed in different forms in different cultures.

body like a bunny
Bunny business. Could you get a body like a Playboy bunny? Paige Rhodes, the resident trainer at the Playboy Mansion, reveals what it really takes to get those killer curves. By Ute Junker. When you hear that every Sunday, the bunnies at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles all enjoy a poolside workout session, the image that instantly springs to mind is probably a bunch of buxom, bikini-clad girls all stretching and pumping away in unison. Kind of like a Shaggy video.

Melanie's battle for beauty
Though the "cosmetologists" of Beverly Hills consider it heresy to say so, expensive beauty treatments can make you look older. Melanie is locked in a no-win war with her beauty treatments. If they don't want anyone to find this out, they should come up with a way to keep Melanie Griffith at home. Recent pictures of the actor, 45, reveal a woman whose essential good looks are caught up in a no-win battle with her beauty treatments. The forehead is smooth (botox injections take care of that) but a little too smooth. Her lips are plump (half the middle-aged women of Los Angeles look as if they've been punched in the mouth, thanks to collagen) but oddly misshapen, while her skin looks reddened and patchy. There is a weary look, too, in Griffith's eyes, and a strange dissonance between those parts of her face that have been "fixed" and those allowed to take their natural course.

New children's book helps kids deal with pain and isolation of plastic surgery
As a pediatric plastic surgeon, Dr. Jessica Krieg changes little faces and lives for the better. Yet for all the good she does, she is all too aware that rhinoplasty and liposuction can be difficult, scary experiences for a child. With her new book, Norah's New Nose, she hopes to change all that.
"These children, on the threshold of becoming something—and someone—beautiful, are often scared and unsure of what's about to be done to them," Krieg said. "In Norah's New Nose, I try to show them there's nothing to fear, and that when it's over, there's no need for

New face in an old frame quite popular
Just like me and millions of other Americans who have had facelifts, tummy-tucks, liposuction, breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, Botox injections, haircoloring and teeth whitening.
Turning old hens into spring chickens isn't news. More than 6 million women used a cosmetic surgeon last year.
But old roosters going under the knife to become young cocks? Would you believe 800,000 men turned to a surgeon to lose fat, reshape noses, eyelids and ears or have hair transplanted? And 44 percent of them were ages 35-50.- copyright Orange County Register -

Botox, the little neurotoxin that could
It was originally approved for medical use in the USA 14 years ago to treat crossed eyes and uncontrollable blinking. Today, it has been used by more than 2.5 million people in 70 countries to treat a wide variety of conditions. Botox's neuromuscular properties make it useful for a variety of ailments. It can help children with cerebral palsy walk. It can end migraines. Doctors who once could only recommend multiple surgeries are now using it to cure clubfoot in infants. It can greatly diminish the physical tics associated with Tourette's syndrome and has been used to treat the severely obese. And this week, British scientists announced that it might treat the chronic pain of cancer. Not bad for something normally associated with frivolous self-involvement. Because the drug in question is the botulinum toxin, commonly sold in the USA as Botox. It may indeed be the friend of aging starlets with its wrinkle-reducing powers. But it also is the deadliest neurotoxin on the planet, able to destroy nerve and muscle function in tiny doses. And it's a biochemical miracle worker that stops nerves from being able to contract muscles for months at a time.

Navel Perspective. What determines whether a navel is an innie or an outie?
While there is not always a definitive explanation for the concave or convex shape of the navel, "what causes it is clearly not the doctor," and it has nothing to do with how the umbilical cord is cut, said Dr. Richard A. Polin, director of the neonatal unit at Children's Hospital of New York-Presbyterian.The umbilical cord runs through a gap in abdominal muscles to connect the developing fetus to the nourishing placenta.

botox good for sweating palms
No sweat: Treatments can turn off excessive perspiration. Your palms are damp. Your feet are drenched. Little pools of sweat are forming under your arms. And all you've done is sit at your desk and check your e-mail.While excessive sweating is expected after a vigorous workout, it can be a pretty big hassle when it seeps through your daily routine. The good news is that this kind of localized sweating is very common and usually isn't cause for alarm, though it certainly can be embarrassing. Fortunately, there are several measures you can take to stay dry and happy.People start off using the aluminum hydroxide daily and if it works, they may only have to use it once or twice each week. But James estimates this treatment works for less than half of the people she sees.If that doesn't work, Botox treatments are a likely next step. Yes, that same stuff that people inject into their faces to clear up wrinkles can also be injected into the problem areas, but while it works well, it's not a permanent fix. Botox treatments will only last four to six months and can cost up to $1,000 - which isn't covered by insurance.
