- One of the first signs of aging is bagginess around the eyes. It is not surprising then that the first operation most patients experience to counteract the effects of aging is a blepharoplasty. It is often performed several years before the need for a facelift although it is not unusual to combine the two.
If your eyes look tired or you have bagginess or lose skin around the eyes you may be candidate for this operation.
It is important to understand that it will not correct crow's feet and crepiness or a heavy brow (brow ptosis) for which other operations are needed. Crow's feet may need resurfacing and brow ptosis needs a brow lift. Dark circles around the eyes will also not be removed with this surgery although in some patients removal of the bags creates less shadowing and makes the circles less noticeable.
This is one of the most common cosmetic operations and one of the most popular with men. In both sexes surgery may be needed in the early thirties. Very often tired, baggy eyes are an inherited characteristic, so you may be able to see how your eyes will look by checking out your parents.
When you are seen in consultation your surgeon will want to know if you suffer from any serious general illness and whether your eyes are healthy.
High blood pressure, diabetes and thyroid disease are the three most important medical problems which may increase the risk of surgery.
In addition, if you have a history of eye disease, such as glaucoma, retinal detachment or dryness, your surgeon may request an evaluation by an ophthalmologist.
