indications for blepharoplasty or eyelid tightening
It is uncommon for patients to have any permanent visual problems after surgery. However it is not uncommon to have some double vision or blurring in the first few hours or even for a day or two after a blepharoplasty. This may be simply due to ointment put in the eyes during surgery. Probably the most common medical reason for double vision is weakness of the muscles which move the eye caused by the injection of local anesthetic. In some patient the lining surface of the eye, the conjunctiva, is swollen and this also interferes with vision.
In both these cases the problem should resolve quickly but if double vision persists it may be due to damage to the muscles around the eye. The most commonly injured muscles are the inferior oblique and the superior oblique muscle. These are close to the inner fat pockets often removed at surgery and are therefore vulnerable to damage.
