glaucoma after a blepharoplasty
- If the pressure within the eye increases during or after surgery it can cause acute glaucoma. This can cause severe pain in the eye after a blepharoplasty.
- Not all patients lose vision at this time but most experience nausea and vomiting along with the pain. The diagnosis is confirmed by measuring the pressure with an instrument called a tonometer
- The treatment is to give medicines to draw fluid out of the eye such as mannitol and acetazolamide. Most doctors also prescribe eye drops containign pilocarpine to shrink the size of the pupil. This makes it easier for the fluid to drain away.
- An opinion from an eye doctor is usually obtained.
