corneal abrasion after a blepharoplasty
- When the surface of the eye around the pupil is scratched or damaged it is called a corneal abrasion. This can cause severe pain in the eye after a blepharoplasty
- It is caused by something scratching the surface of the eye during surgery, such as a gauze sponge, stitches or instruments. For this reason surgeons are careful to protect the eye as much as possible during operation.
- The pain is often severe and feels as though there is something in the eye. The eye is very sensitive to light and is constantly tearing.
- The diagnosis can be confirmed by staining the surface of the eye with fluorescein and examining it with a special light. Small breaks in the surface of the cornea can be seen.
- The treatment is usually simple. Antibiotic ointment and an eye patch. Most abrasions are healed within a day or so. If there is any doubt about the diagnosis or if it does not heal quickly a consultation with an eye doctor is usually obtained.
