Fine lines and indentation due to aging can be treated in many different ways. Over the last few years many non-surgical methods of treating these areas are used. Two of the most common are collagen and Goretex plastic implants.

Collagen is used for fine lines but has the disadvantage that it is not permanent and must be repeated.

Gore-tex implants are made of plastic, expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE), which is placed below the skin to fill in defects and fine lines.

It has the advantage that it does not appear to be rejected and is therefore permanent.

The manufacturer says that over 4 million implants have been used with no confirmed cases of allergic reaction.

The material is solid but allows the body's normal tissue to grow in it.

The insertion of the material is usually an office procedure. It is threaded beneath the skin and trimmed to fit the defect. Some surgeons close the incisions and secure the implant but many surgeons find that the wounds heal well without stitching.

After surgery many patients experience pain, swelling, stiffness and numbness for a week or so after surgery. Even when the swelling has resolved some patients find that the area feels different from the surrounding normal tissue.

Complications can occur but are usually not severe. Excessive swelling, bruising, infection and fistula formation have been described. Some patients may extrude the implants and collections of fluid (seromas) can occur. Poor healing and an unsatisfactory cosmetic result are also possible. In some people the area around the implant may remain firm and hard (indurated).
