He no longer performs primary sex change operations. These involve penile removal and vaginal reconstruction, for those designated male and needing male to female change. For those born with female organs and requesting change to male, these operations involve vaginal ablation and penile reconstruction.
Dr. Hudson does perform secondary sex change operations. He has over twenty five years experience performing secondary sex change operations, for example breast implants or breast tissue removal.
Many issues associated with gender identity can cause emotional stress. Dr. Hudson is experienced in the emotional and physical aspects of such issues and can advise you about the value of surgery in your situation. in addition he has training in Mental Health Counseling and is uniquely qualified to help you make your decision.
All patients considering gender surgery need to be in psychotherapy with a therapist experienced in gender issues. In ALL cases, as a pre-requisite to performing surgery, Dr. Hudson requires a letter before surgery from a psychotherapist that surgery will improve your emotional health, and well-being.
Gender dysphoria, and transgender issues, are subjects of particular interest for Dr. Hudson, and he will treat you with respect and dignity. However, he will only perform surgery when he feels the benefits of surgery for you outweigh the potential physical, and psychological disadvantages.
It is important to remember that no surgeon can give a guarantee about the final outcome, including appearance, shape, size and so on. You should have a realistic attitude about the outcome, and remember that all surgery has good and bad aspects. That there is no such thing as ‘perfect surgery’.
The satisfaction rate for cosmetic surgery is around 90% and although a satisfactory outcome is anticipated this means that 10% of people do not achieve the result that either the patient or the surgeon would like.
If things do not go well you may need revision or secondary surgery. Although many surgeons do not charge for this, there is often a charge for anesthesia and operating room costs.
